Subject: Lathe and KMotionCNC

Hi folks,

I am about to order new servos for my lathe Z/X axis. At the same time I would like to use AC Servo as spindle motor/driver.
Is there any issues going this way instead of using old 3-phase motor+VFD and not having Encoder control for threading and not having exact positioning either for that matter, future I would like to have driven tools also.

To start I will probably only go for Kflop and step/dir to control these 3 servos or is it advisable to hook up Kanalog also and go analog control? Very tight to get all in the control box I have now on the lathe.

Anybody running a setup like this with threading and possible C axis?

Is there any Lathe screens for KMotionCNC?

Cheers

Bengt

Hi Bengt,

Go for the Kanalog. Saves you the trouble of breakout boards and goves you FETdrivers for coolant etc and OPTOS for limits etc

Moi Tapio,

At the moment there is not so much to be connected so I do believe KFlop is sufficient. Only concern I have IF it is manageable with step/dir and closing the loop with the driver. Also space is limited as it is now and can of course be changed.

Anyways I do understand you are running lathe with KFlop/Kanalog but are you using KMotionCNC?

Hej,

Still stuck with Mach3 as front end.
Closing the loop with the driver would call for some sort of input for KFlop to know if max following error is exceeded, at least if you want all movement to stop
if one axis stalls.

I have:
one setup where Kflop/Kanalog are on second level on top of wire connectors with long stands (60*50*45cm, 4 servo drives, filters etc way too much but works)
one setup where Kflop/Kanalog are on control cabinet door
one setup where Kflop/Kanalog are on cabinet side on baseplate that is mounted to cabinet side wall with kitchen drawer slides(från biltema)

so I'm confident you find the space too :-)

Hi Bengt,

There is a basic Lathe Screen for KMotionCNC.  Look under Tool Setup | Setup Files | Dialog Faces

Hi Tom,

Thanks for the tip. Do you know if there is anyone that has made a GUI like in Mach3 for Kmotion as I am spoiled with graphical GUI like the one in Mach3 but keen to get away from Mach3 and if no plugin is going to be made for Mach4 as I understood it then KMotionCNC is the way to go.

Please don´t get me wrong here but a 'better' GUI is what I am looking for so any help in that direction would be much appreciated.

Cheers

Hi Bengt,

Can you post an image of the Mach3 Lathe Screen that you like?

I assume you have M3 so goto VIEW - Load Screens - From dropdown choose Turn Files = 1024.lset

This a set of several screens

Manual

Auto  + here you have also Cycle

This screenset is working OK even with touch screen

Personally I don't think the standard Mach3 lathe screenset is that good an example. I feel like they're trying too hard to be everything for every possible machine/setup, which means they contain far more than what's really needed, and split things across too many screens.
Using my current setup as an example using the standard screens, first I have to go into the manual screen to home the lathe, then exit that and go to the auto screen to load the file, then I have to enter the cycle screen to actually run the part.

KMotionCNC basic lathe screen does the job, but it is not ideal for touchscreen, and doesn't have the same visual appeal as what Mach screens can i.e. things like button LEDs to let you know that whatever the button controls is actually on.

What I think is a good Mach3 turn screenset is Hood's - https://www.dropbox.com/s/stxzthpk4rkp90m/lathescreengrab.png?dl=0

It's a reasonably basic single screen setup, but contains all the key components you really need to run a lathe, although there is no jogging related items on the screen other than Jog Active, as he does rely on an external MPG/axis/step selector for jogging.

That screenset is a close copy of Fanuc lathe screens - works OK for
them. It was designed to be touch screen friendly and without a
dedicated control panel is about the least you can get away with.
Changing screens is quite normal on commercial machines also. Once
you've homed the machine you only need to use the auto screen and the
cycle screen to run parts and it's one click or touch to switch back and
forth. If you've no home switches you can zero from the auto screen and
forget the manual screen altogether...
